Not sure if the word got out yet? `Not wanting to gloat but ... The TPD golden bears (old farts) had a better than average hunt in November. Plenty of local wild cherries meant lots of local and not-so-local bruins. Add fresh snow and we hit "paydirt" in Potter County! We got 2 on the first 2 drives and we were back at our "sleeps-20+" cabin for "brunch" by 10 AM. Br. Gene Odato's 317 lb. male and Br. Stephen "Benny" Warner's 175 lb. male black bears made for a great group photo. The following day our two youngest particpants, Br. Chris Wiley's son, Jake(13), and long-time bear hunter John Pendell's (my Mont Alto PSU room mate's) son got some action. Anthony (16) tagged a 100 lb. female after we drove the same clearcut 3 times; and with the help (keen eye and steady aim) of Br. Don Klinger. A good time was had by all ... Except for da bears!

I know you bowhunters and waterfolwers might be busy, but hope you consider it, still be able to climb a tree for deer that evening or catch the evening flight. A know one or two members from your fraternity have posted on our message board in the past (that is how I knew about you guys), if anyone still goes there please look up the HuntingPA Youth hunt threads and make contact. Otherwise you can e-mail me @ pcmtnman@yahoo.com We are currently looking for the best bird hunting location in that area as well, we may be as close as Toftrees that day based off info we got so far. The Misses and I will be down in September for a lions game (alumni-branch campus) and plan to tour the hunt site then, and since the Lions are away in MN on the 10/7 weekend we are hoping we can get some local help on hunt day....and don't worry we will have the game on the radio at hunt HQ. Thanks in advance for any responses...I got a two sons that are no doubt going to be Lions, please keep this fraternity going till then, think it is what PA is all about and looks like a great group. Thanks for your time....good hunting!!! Love the bear hunt section of the page!

Lads, I have a house that will be vacant in August or September. It is a half hour from S.C. in Penn's Valley. Ass kicking trout fishing is literally a stones throw away, in Penns Creek. Bald Eagle S.F. is a half mile away. Built in 1803, 3.5 bed, 1.5 bath, includes a good sized barn, on 0.8 acres. Log structure with wooden siding. New kitchen and family room with exposed hemlock logs. Anyone interested, please write to mick@batgate.com

Fellas, I recently purchased a larger boat so the famous "Minnow" is now up for sale. Its a 12' fiberglass boat w/ a trailer, oars, trolling motor, lights, casting deck, 9.9 HP motor(in one piece but needs timing adjusted), and a pile of parts, manuals, etc. I listed it in the paper down here for $600 but I'd be willing to work out a Tau Phi deal. If anyone is interested give me a call 717-951-8963 or email scs170@yahoo.com. I could bring it up for Homecoming if someone is interested.

Greetings, fellows: Some of you I met during my recent pilgrimage to the Tree House for a feature story I'm writing for Field & Stream on TPD and the bear hunts. You should know that the story is finished, the editors love it, it'll run this fall, and you should not be concerned about anyone being identified as engaging in lascivious and questionable behavior. (But hey, there are other magazines that might be curious about the process involved at TPD). Let me thank all you guys I hunted with for an absolutely fantastic trip and I hope I'd done you proud with my scrivelings. Now I'm working on another story, and I thought that TPD brothers and alumni might be interested to hear about it, given the fact that you guys occasionally attempt to shoot an ungulate. It's a guide to deer camps and deer club life that will involve a whole bunch of tips and tricks and such -- I'm gonna paste a description of it in this posting. But I thought that TPD folks might have some engaging and interesting input on some of the topics. If you read over this list and think of something, let me know. Drop me an email at enickens@nc.rr.com. I'd love to hear from you. Bear in mind, though, that I have as many jokes and gags as I need, ie I'm not really looking for the story of the worst deer camp fart you ever experienced. Check out the list and holler at me if you will. And seriously, guys, ya'll treated me and Erika to a super experience, and I think the story will reflect that. Best, Eddie Nickens editor-at-large / Field & Stream “The Best of Deer Camp: A Guide to the Greatest Week of Your Life!” Over the next month I’ll be putting together a 10-page guide to deer camp life that will include a wide range of topics: deer camp projects, tips, recipes, skills, and odd and curious other stuff. I'm looking for tips on ways that your deer camp does things better (or worse) than anywhere else you've ever been. Maybe it’s a venison recipe served on Opening Day for years and years and years. (Or maybe it’s the story of the worst meal you ever had in deer camp.) Or a tradition you have each time a member misses a deer. Perhaps there’s something you’ve built or designed that makes deer camp life better—a spring box or latrine or meat pole or lantern hanger that you think guys across America might like to hear about. I'm looking for things like this: --The best rules to have in camp to make sure everyone gets along. And the worst rules that don't work. --The best, most creative physical improvements to deer camp you've ever visited--weekend projects, quick repairs, problem solvers (how do you fix a leaky camp roof while it's pouring down rain?) --What are your camp's favorite recipes, especially regional specialties? What's a great quick breakfast to get you into the woods early? Any unusual ways to make camp coffee? --Regional tips: How do you guys up north stay warm in camp when the temperature is below freezing? How do you guys in the south battle bugs? That sort of thing. Other topics I'll cover include --Which guest policies work. And which don't --The weirdest deer camps in America --Skills such as skinning deer, minimizing smoke from cabin fireplaces, how to get to sleep with a snorer in the room, that sort of thing.

Subject: Video footage on TPD website
Date: 06/18/05
Recently, there were talks about being able to place video footage on the website of hunts and certain events. I have successfully uploaded a video on to the website without any difficulty. The video was from my digital camera of the Indy 500 and is in the .mpeg format. Most computers come with the ability to open up that type of video file easily. Sooooooo, if you have footage in that type of format please let me know and we can begin a new link on the webpage. I'm thinking footage of the next bear drives would be a great idea. I know some of you have some turkey hunting footage but I don't know what format it is in. If you would like to see the file I uploaded of the race type in the following URL in your browser: www.tauphidelta.org/Video/template.htm. I recommend saving the file to your desktop and then deleting the file after you are done viewing. Trying to run the footage as it is download is pretty crappy. My email can be found in the directory.

Since the "Open" discussion forum is the only one that is being hit with these probes, its more than likely that one/many of those viewing this page have a little friend embedded in their computer. The original thought was that these were just random searches that would write on any page they found in the internet. Looking at the previous writers to the forum before the plague of advertisements hit, it looks like some of the computers at the house are infected. For some reason, I am not surprised by this. Maybe we could reduce the number of porn sites we visit. And since I doubt that will actually happen, we should take another path. There are many virus programs out there that are relatively cheap ($20/year) that I recommend you get if your computer doesn't already have one installed...or at least get them updated. I have Nortan's on mine and just downloaded it right from their site. It is updated practically weekly and is really user-friendly. I'll still work on the password protection issue as well from my end.

I haven't checked this Forum for a little while. Isn't it funny that someone that wants to sell programs that stop people from scanning your stuff uses that very tactic to advertise. I work with a bunch of nerds (i.e. automation engineers) that are pretty good with just about anything that has to do with computers. I'll ask them for some help and see what I can come up with. So far I haven't received any complaints about the email address server so it looks like the little algorithm I got going there is working out fine. The discussion forums are a bit more of a challenge. I'll keep you posted.

Last year, one of our brothers, Gene Odato, was diagnosed with leukemia. He is currently recovering from a stem cell transplant at Johns Hopkins. Four years ago, I had a transplant for leukemia myself. Now, I have committed to help the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society raise money to fight leukemia and other blood-related cancers. LLS provided information and helped fund the experimental transplant that saved my life. They are also helping Gene. I have joined Team-In-Training, in which participants raise funds while training for an endurance race. My goal is to raise $1500. At least 75% goes directly to research and patient services. On May 14, I will run the Idaho Great Potato Marathon. Please go to http://www.active.com/donate/tntrm/tntrmTCopela to donate on-line. Or respond directly to me (tcopelan@vt.edu) and I will provide a donation form and a stamped return envelope. All donations are tax-deductible. Over 110,000 new cases of blood cancer will be diagnosed this year. Your donation will help people like Gene as well as fund the vital research to prevent others from suffering as he and I did. Please respond by March 15 (donations will be accepted until after race day). Tim ‘Clone’ Copeland

The second annual Tau Phi Delta Smokepole Drives will take place Saturday, January 8. Anyone is welcome, provided you have a muzzleloader (or archery) license and the required antlered/anterless tag(s). Remember that an unfilled back (buck) tag may be used statewide to harvest an antlerless deer with a flintlock in the primative-arms season. We will be hunting near State College (WMU 4D) as well as in Rothrock State Forest. Last year we had around 12 guys participate, and we moved a pile of deer. Several smokey blasts were fired, but none were true. We hope to change that this year. With a little help from the weather (last year it rained), I'm confident that we will bring home some venison. Many hunters last year met at the House Friday night and lodged there. Plan is the same for this year. Took all day to get it out of the woods. Wednesday, the hunt was called off due to heavy rain and horrendous hangovers. Another excellent season; look for more details in The Chronicles. Subject: VA Alumni?
Hello All! Just wanted to let you know that I have moved to VA. Since concrete seems to be the tree of choice here and crows and "mini" deer are the only animals, I am searching for new ventures. If any alumni in the Northern VA area or anywhere in VA reside, it would be great to find new hunting partners or an occasional place to hunt. My email is kwalter4466@aol.com and I am living in Burke. Hope all is well and Turkeys have been kind to you this spring! See everyone at the Golf Tourny.

Subject: Great Web Site
Just wanted to say hello to my old TPD's buddies(pledge class 1980). This web site is great; it is a great source for getting some emails out to old friends. I'm living in Erie County, where I hit the steelhead streams every weekend. Nice to see the house still has kept he "Bear Hunt" going. I enjoyed reading the hunting stories on this web site. The old memories came flooding back to me while I was reading. Earl, if you read this, I need a new TPD Bear Cap; mine from 1980 is getting a little worn. . . Thanks, Gary Swanson (GBSwanny@hotmail.com)

Subject: Alumni Dinner
Hi everyone! The website looks fantastic. Sorry I haven't been around lately, but work keeps me very busy. I think I might be able to make it to the local alumni dinner, but I would like to get more info. Namely, what time do we need to be there and who do we need to contact if we are coming? I updated my address and phone number on the "update" page, so you can get in touch with me. Also, I guess I have some news. After five years with Al, we are finally getting married this October. It will be a very small wedding in Jersey Shore, so I'll try to get you a picture or two, if you're interested. Hope everyone is doing well. Also, let me know if you would like me to get involved again with the little sister's program. I'll do what I can. P.S. Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it to South Seas this year. I've been photographing Dave Martin's Bullride Mania the past few years and it falls on the same day. I'll be in Harrisburg that whole weekend. Sorry! Keep in touch. Satan aka Tanya

Subject: Spring raffle
The spring and fall raffles as well as homecoming are very expensive. Each semester we put a lot of effort into getting good prizes and each year we get about the same response. We send out 696 newsletters to alumni with only 40 to 50 returns each semester. The prizes this semester are outstanding and well worth a two dollar ticket to have a chance to win. The spring raffle supports the membership fund and gives us the chance to do better things to increase membership at the house. If you are not interested in the spring raffle then maybe just do a fall raffle to cut down on costs. If you have any feelings towards this fell free to contact me at mah400@psu.edu and let me know if you fell one way or another. Thank you.

Hello! I am Lisa, a little sister from 1988. I married Br. 'Wallace" aka Paul Schmidt! Wondering if anyone has any information on Joe Kolodjie (I know I messed up the spelling of his last name.) He was the Phi in '89, I think. Last I heard he married Little Sister Alex Davis. I've been looking for them for a little while. Checked the Web site-don't see any possible connections. If you hear, let me know. I would appreciate it. Earl Hower sent me pictures of Bob's bear!! How awesome! Hope all is well with the House and the Brothers. Take care, Lisa

Subject: Bear Drive Chronicles
I hope to have the Chronicles completed by the middle of this week. The essential facts: On the second (and last) drive of the first day on a remote mountain near the Huntington/Mifflin county line, the Tau Phi Delta Bear Hunters downed two fine bruin. Br. Bob Fitterling used a 12-gauge shotgun with slugs to anchor a bear weighing 390 pounds dressed (460 live weight). It was Br. Fitterling's first bear in 16 years of hunting with the House. On his first-ever bear hunt, Pledge Shaun Doran dropped a bear with a single shot from his .243. Shaun's bruin weighed in at 297 pounds dressed (350 live weight). On Wednesday's first drive, a bear was sighted fleeing into a clearcut, but no shots were fired. In all, it was an excellent season when extensive scouting paid off with over 800 pounds of bruin. Details to follow in the Chronicles. For everyone hunting today (and the rest of the firearms deer season), good luck and be safe.
