Emerald Ash Borer Trapper: DUTIES include conducting emerald ash borer trap placement and monitoring in various locations in select northern Virginia localities (Clarke, Warren, Fauquier, Loudon, Fairfax, Prince William, Spotsylvania, Stafford, King George, Orange, Culpeper, Frederick, and Rappahannock). Survey activities require initial trap placement, monthly inspections, and trap removal from the sites. Trap placement, trap construction, and data recorded on the trap will be subject to Quality Control inspections. Trapper’s base point will be their home. Trappers must reside in close proximity to their work area. Trappers will report to Plant and Pest Services’ supervisory personnel as needed to conduct collection of trapping data from GPS units and spreadsheets, checking GPS data for errors, planning tasks, replacement of broken/defective equipment, and submission of administrative paperwork. REQUIRES: Knowledge of tree identification and insect biology, particularly ash species and emerald ash borer, respectively. Proven ability to follow instructions, work independently, make decisions, organize work, and interact effectively with inspectors, other trappers, and the general public. Good oral and written communication skills are necessary. Computer experience required, preferably with programs such as Word and Excel. Familiarity with a GPS unit is desired. This position is physically demanding and involves considerable walking, standing, kneeling, reaching, driving for long periods, and exposure to outside weather conditions, and natural elements. A valid driver's license is required. Use of personal vehicle is required with established mileage reimbursement. The seasonal employment period is April through September. These are wage positions restricted to 1,500 hours per year and have no state benefits and no overtime. Employment in each position is anticipated to be a maximum of 800 hours. Regular work hours are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Hourly rate of pay is $11.54 or higher commensurate with experience.
